We give a lot of wine for gifts around here, but usually we don't realize we are giving anything until the last minute. Which often means I don't have a gift bag available to make the bottle look pretty.
Fortunately, I've laid in a small supply of wine gift tags. Just sign the back, toss them around the neck of the bottle and viola - instant gift!
These are fun and super easy to make. I decorated mine with rubber stamps, but feel free to decorate your tags however you want.
Step 1:
I thought I'd try out making tutorials out like this, but a big question....can you read my handwriting alright? I know it's not the best. I'm going to continue as if you can read it with no issues, but I'll come back and edit this entry if anyone needs.
So anyways...
The dotted black line just shows where to score and fold the strip of paper - you don't need to draw that line. Feel free to use nice pattern papers, a photo, or homemade paper instead of a plain piece of cardstock like I'm showing above.
Step 2:
I have a hole punch and a corner rounder, but if you don't have those tools, just trace a circle about 1 1/4 inches in diameter for the hole (the bottom of one of those little paper bathroom cups works well). Use that same object to trace a curve at each of the corners. Then you can just use sissors or an exacto knife to cut the hole out and round the corners.
Step 3:
I used two different stamp sets to make my gift tag - Hello Sunshine by Paper Tray Inc. and Happy Thoughts by Verve Stamps (it's on sale right now!). I stamped both with Distress Ink in the color Wild Honey. I also used a small sponge and edged the tag and the circle with a little bit of the distress ink. I used a small bit of foam adhesive tape to attach the circle with the sentiment to the tag.
Here's another example using different stamps:
For that gift tag I used the Canvas Stripes stamp and the Find Joy set both by Hero Arts. I cut a small strip to stamp the sentiment on then cut a notch in one end to make it look like a banner. I also punched out a small heart for a little accent. This time I used Barn Door Distress Ink.
Other decorating ideas that come to my mind:
- use stickers
- draw your own design
- use the dingbat font in word to print out small icons - then just cut them out and paste them to the tag
- cut out words or phrases from magazines or newspapers and glue them on the tag (ransom note style).
- for a more industrial, masculine-looking tag use an old corrugated box to make the tags - peel away the top layer(s) of cardboard until you can see the rippled stuff in the middle
- Use buttons, ribbon, or charms as accents on your tag
I hope this inspires you to make your own gift tags for giving wine. I think they are adorable enough that you don't have to wrap up the bottles, but hey, I'm just lazy like that!
Happy Trills!
Katie
