Laura is still up in Excelsior Springs, so it's my turn to share a weekly quest with you all. I was starting to sweat whether I'd have a quest to share with everyone yesterday. I had no plans in sight until well after lunch when a neighbor who has frontage on the Meramec River invited Clyde and I down for a fish fry. It was so hot, we were both ready to jump into the cool waters of the Meramec, so as soon as we closed up shop, we headed down the hill to Murphy's Place to join our neighbors.
I grabbed my camera, and away we went. Before dinner I hiked around their river frontage taking photos. Even though it was 7pm or so, there were still plenty of floaters on the river.
Just a bit upriver from where we were to eat dinner, there is an opening to a cave:
I've never climbed in the cave, but it sounds like a good future adventure!
The tiny ferns growing in the rocks were adorable...
After admiring the forest around the cave, I walked back to get some dinner and watched the last of the floaters head downriver...
Then headed up to the pavillion to join everyone else:
We ate fried catfish (on of my favorite things!), turkey, hushpuppies, potato casserole, cucumber & onion salad and assorted melons for dinner last night. YUMMO! I was so hungry I didn't take a picture of any of the finished food, but just to tantalize you, here is a picture of the frying fish...
I wish I could tell you that we paired a fantastic wine with all that great food. But we drank beer instead. Pabst Blue Ribbon to be exact.
Whenever I drink PBR I sing these lyrics..."I've got a six-pack in my belly, and a cold P.B.R. in the car". Quick - name that tune!
After dinner, a few of the guests hiked up river and took a dip in the extremely cold fishing springs water. The spring water made the regular river feel like a hot tub!
By the time we got back up to the pavillion darkness had descended. We visited for a few minutes on the banks of the river, then headed home. Ahhhh.....it's good to have river neighbors! I hope you can enjoy a river quest this summer!
Happy Trills,
Katie
